Convert bank statements for Tally
Locked e-statement PDFs to Tally-ready Excel — Dr/Cr normalised, lakh grouping cleaned, balance-checked before import.
TallyPrime, Tally XML, and the Indian statement quirks
TallyPrime imports bank statements through Alt+O (Import) → Bank Statement against a bank ledger, with a preview before anything posts and a reconciliation summary after. It reads the statement formats of 145+ banks directly, and Release 4.0 onwards also imports transactions from Excel with a column mapping. The export is shaped for those screens: one row per transaction, unambiguous dates, one signed amount column, the full narration preserved for matching.
The real work happens before Tally ever sees the file. Indian statements arrive as password-protected PDFs with separate Dr/Cr columns, lakh-grouped figures (1,23,456.78) and DD-MM-YYYY dates. Conversion opens the locked file (the password is never stored), turns Dr/Cr into signed amounts, reads lakh grouping as standard decimals, and reconciles every statement against its own printed opening and closing balances — so what reaches Tally already ties out.
