Importing into FreeAgent

FreeAgent accepts uploaded statements in OFX, which makes the import a two-click affair — the format carries dates, descriptions and signed amounts natively. (New here? Start at the FreeAgent converter page.)

Step by step

  1. Convert your statement and download the OFX export.
  2. In FreeAgent, open the bank account and choose Upload a statement.
  3. Select the OFX file. FreeAgent reads it directly — no column mapping — and queues the transactions for explaining.

CSV as the fallback

FreeAgent also accepts CSV uploads if you prefer: our layout is date, description, amount (signed), balance. OFX is smoother; CSV is more inspectable.

Backfilling before your feed

The common FreeAgent job is history from before the bank feed was connected — a new client's first year, or a gap while switching banks. Convert those months in one batch (each statement is independently balance-checked) and upload them oldest-first, so the account's running history builds in order.

After the upload

The account's statement balance should land on the statement's printed closing figure — verified during conversion. Explain transactions as normal from there.
